Annual giveSPORTS Equipment Drive in Partnership with Kroenke Sports Charities

Each year, A Precious Child and Kroenke Sports Charities partner for the giveSPORTS Equipment Drive at the Pepsi Center. During 2019’s event, community members donated more 9,406 pounds of equipment, allowing us to serve 15,009 Colorado children in need.  Overall, the giveSPORTS Equipment Drive has collected over 177,000 pieces of sports equipment and more than $75,000 in sports scholarships benefiting kids in the Denver Metro area.

If you can’t make it out to the Pepsi Center on September 12th, please consider purchasing sports equipment through our Amazon Wish List.

How does the program work?

A Precious Child collects donated new and gently-used sports equipment and distributes these items to children in the most need in the community through our Resource Center as well as our Agency Partners.

Children are able to submit a scholarship application for any sport of their choosing to help cover the cost of registration, tournament fees, camp fees, uniform fees and needed equipment, as well as other sports related fees.

A Precious Child believes that no child should be sidelined because of their circumstances. These scholarships give children in need the opportunity to participate in sports alongside their peers despite the hardships they are facing.

Why we do what we do

Extracurricular activities are expensive and become an unattainable dream for children in need due to the already stretched budgets of their families. With funding being cut for youth sports and physical education being taken out of schools, as well as the expense to participate in organized sports, the giveSPORTS program is a bridge to help a child stay active and put them on the path to a higher GPA and a higher attendance rate.

Participation in extracurricular sports significantly impacts short- and long-term educational, emotional, behavioral and physical outcomes for disadvantaged, poverty stricken youth (International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity).

Children who have the opportunity to play sports learn many life lessons such as team work, leadership, sportsmanship, responsibility, ethics, time management, how to strive to win and how to cope with losing. All of these skills translate into the classroom and, one day, into careers.
