Steps to Becoming a Mentor

Step 1: Attend A Precious Child’s Volunteer Orientation – Get to know A Precious Child and our organization. Here you will learn more about all of our programs, specifically our Precious Mentor Program. Sign up for orientation here!

Step 2: Initial Interview – Once you attend orientation and are ready to continue with becoming a mentor, you will set up an initial phone interview with Precious Mentor staff so you can get to know the program and staff more. If you are still interested after this call, staff will send you an application link to apply.

Step 3: Apply – When you receive your application link, you will fill it out and submit it for staff approval.

Step 4: Background and Fingerprint Check – Once your application is received, you will receive information regarding a background and fingerprint check. We ask that you complete the background check form and schedule your fingerprint check for as soon as possible.

Step 5: Approval and Training – Once your background check, fingerprint check and references come back clean; we will let you know you have been selected to be a mentor! You will be expected to attend training at A Precious Child before the matching process starts.

Step 6: Matching – After you complete training, we will start looking to match you with a mentee based on your application and interview.  Once we find a mentee, we will be in touch with you to confirm the match. We will then set up a match meeting with the mentee and their parent/guardian.

Step 7: Support – Precious Mentor staff will check-in with you every other week for your first few months then move to monthly check-ins! A Precious Child staff is there to offer support when needed and provide guidance.

FAQs for Mentors

How long does it take to get matched?

Our Precious Mentor program works to make matches that are intentional, meaning we are looking for similar interests, geographic location and complementary personalities. We are hoping to match within three months of you being fully trained.

How many times do I meet with my mentee?

You will meet with your mentee each week for an entire calendar year. These will be two-three hours long and in-person meetings. Depending on special circumstances, there is the option to meet virtually.

Will I be supported?

For the first three months you are matched, you will have bi-weekly check-ins with a Precious Mentor staff. These are for you to talk about your match, ask questions and get advice on how to better work with your mentee. After three months, check-ins will be monthly and/or as needed.

What activities do I do with my mentee?

You and your mentee can do countless activities! We suggest finding free events in your community as well as utilizing free resources in Colorado! You can go to sporting events, try a new restaurant, go to the library, and more! Precious Mentor staff can help find activities in your area but asking your mentee what they want to do will give you the best ideas!

Are there any trainings for mentors?

As a mentor, you will participate in an initial three-hour training. Precious Mentor staff will be offering additional trainings throughout the year, some will be required and some will be optional. If there is something you want more guidance on, please let staff know!
